Knights of Columbus Calls on All 230,000 Members to Demand Morgentaler Award be Revoked

OTTAWA, ON, July 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a letter sent to the Canadian Governor General yesterday, Natale Gallo, the President of the Canadian Association of Knights of Columbus, demanded that the Order of Canada, which was awarded to abortionist Henry Morgentaler on Canada Day (July 1st), be "rescinded immediately." In addition, the Knights have called on all their 230,000 members and families in Canada to lobby to demand that the decision to award the Order to Morgentaler be revoked.

The letter, a copy of which has been obtained by LifeSiteNews.com, speaks of the "hundreds of thousands" of Canadian children that "have been disposed of" by abortion.  "This action denigrates the Order to the point that it becomes meaningless, futile and divisive," says the letter. The full statement from Gallo, calling on the Knights in Canada to take action to demand that the order be revoked, follows:

"'The Order of Canada' was established in 1967 as the highest civilian honour within the Canadian system. It is supposed to exemplify the motto "desiderantes meliorem patriam" (Hebrews 11:16), Meaning 'those who desire a better country'.

"Indeed it is a sad day when this honour is bestowed upon such an individual as dr. Henry Morgentaler, who has brought destruction to the helpless and defenseless unborn.

"As president of the Canadian association of Knights of Columbus, I urge all our Canadian state deputies and our more than 230,000 Canadian knights and families to stand united with our bishops and to contact the offices of the Prime Minister, the Governor General, the Leader of the Opposition, their own Member of Parliament, and the members of the advisory council for the Order, to express their revulsion at the prospect of presenting such an award to the nation's largest and most outspoken abortionist.

"It is imperative for us to urge our Canadian government leaders to ensure that this act of dishonour against our country and our families is revoked."
