California Attorney General Heavily Biases Ballot Initiative Wording in Favor of Same-Sex 'Marriage'
By John-Henry Westen
LOS ANGELES, CA, July 30, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - California Attorney General Jerry Brown has shown his true colors in a move to derail efforts aimed at protecting the man-woman definition of marriage in his state.
Brown has been threatened with a lawsuit by marriage defenders for altering the wording of the marriage ballot initiative to grossly bias it in favor of homosexual "marriage." Promoters of Proposition 8 collected signatures of more than 1.1 million Californians to have the Constitutional Amendment Proposition put on the November ballot.
The original wording of Proposition 8 read that the measure would amend the state constitution to ensure that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." That same language was previously approved in 2000 by over 61% of California voters. However, the decision of the citizens of California on the matter was undone by four justices of the state Supreme Court in San Francisco earlier this summer.
Last week Brown's office released the altered version of the wording of the Proposition, which says that it would "eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry." Those who collected the million plus signatures for the original wording are furious and have threatened a lawsuit.
Brown's activism on the measure comes as little surprise to those who have been following the matter closely. Brown joined homosexual activists earlier this year urging the court to reject the ballot initiative. On July 16, however, the state Supreme Court dismissed the effort to have the initiative thrown off the November ballot.
