Catholic Virginia Governor and Possible VP Candidate Supports Abortion
By Tim Waggoner
RICHMOND, VA, July 31, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a Wednesday interview with PBS's Charlie Rose, which was covered by ABC, Catholic Virginia Governor and possible vice-presidential candidate Tim Kaine proclaimed his support for the notorious Roe vs Wade decision and said he does not think abortion should be recriminalized in the US.
The Catholic Governor said that while he is "personally opposed" to abortion, he feels the outcome of Roe vs Wade - the decriminalization of abortion in the US - is necessary to preserve the "personal liberty" of Americans.
"Roe vs. Wade is ultimately about saying that there is a realm of personal liberty for people to make this decision," said Kaine.
While Kaine communicated his belief that abortion affirms the freedom of a mother to choose, the Catholic Church declares that the destruction of life by abortion is an intrinsic evil and does not fall into the realm of legitimate personal choice.
Catholics in America are especially perturbed by Kaine's comments because he is considered a potential vice-presidential running mate for Barack Obama.
Brian Burch, President of Fidelis, a Catholic legal group committed to defending life, faith and family has iterated these concerns.
"Both the bishops and the laity continue to wrestle with the scandal of prominent Catholic politicians who support abortion, and the choice of a pro-abortion Catholic running mate would amount to scratching at a deep and festering wound in the American Catholic Church," said Burch. "Sadly Kaine represents yet another politician who professes to be 'personally opposed' yet refuses to back any meaningful efforts to stop abortion in America."
While supporting abortion in the US, Kaine does believe some restrictions should be upheld, such as banning partial birth abortions. Burch addressed this fact, but said it is insignificant because of Kaine's disregard for the inherent right to life of the unborn.
"Tim Kaine deserves some credit for supporting a ban on partial birth abortion, but he has also made clear that he is totally committed to protecting the right to kill unborn children, in direct opposition to his Church," said Burch.
"Opposing the barbaric practice of infanticide is better than Barack Obama, but it hardly qualifies one as pro-life," said Burch.
