Barack Obama Wrests Pro-Abortion Pro-Gay Standard of Democratic Party from Hillary Clinton
By Peter J. Smith
DENVER, Colorado, June 4, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - As the dust settles from last night's final two primary battles for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Barack Obama stands victorious over Sen. Hillary Clinton, having wrested from her the party's pro-abortion, pro-homosexual mantle after a long and bitter campaign.
Obama now has enough delegates and super-delegates to clinch the nomination after the June 3 primaries where a narrow loss to Sen. Clinton in South Dakota was followed with a resounding victory in Montana just hours later. Obama has now won 2166 delegates to Clinton's 1927 according to a CBS News tally, surpassing the threshold of the 2118 delegates needed to win the nomination.
The nomination was a bruising battle for Democrats, who had the difficult task of watching two ardently pro-abortion, pro-homosexual candidates slug it out for over five months in an historic primary race that would determine whether they would seek to relive the Clinton-era or move on to work for the election of the first black president of the United States.
As the race heated up, the young charismatic Obama seemed to take on messianic proportions for multitudes of Democrats entranced by his smooth, polished rhetoric of the politics of "hope" and "change" - a perennial frustration for Clinton, who had to thank New Hampshire voters for "helping me find my voice."
In the course of the campaign both candidates fought bitterly over who would be the most "gay" candidate for the party (http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2007/jul/07071109.html), and which had the most radical commitment to abortion, the holy grail of serious Democratic politicians.
Obama would use his Christian faith to say that Jesus supported same-sex unions on the Sermon of the Mount. (http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/mar/08030412.html), while Clinton would respond to homosexuals that she would have a "gay" administration and would be the first president to march in a gay pride parade.
On the issue of abortion, Clinton garnered the enthusiasm and support of many old-guard pro-abortion feminists, except one - the notorious Frances Kissling, dubbed the "philosopher of the pro-choice movement" by abortion advocates, who instead threw her critical support to Obama, saying he was more committed to defeating the pro-life movement in the culture wars once and for all. (http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/feb/08021910.html)
Clinton then accused Obama of not having enough commitment to preserving abortion in the United States - a charge that belied the fact the Illinois Senator had even voted against saving the lives of infants who were born alive - which prompted a vociferous response from pro-abortion advocates, pointing out his 100% rating from Planned Parenthood. The final stretch of the race showed Obama had seized the imagination of the base by attracting monster crowds, including one estimated crowd of 75,000 in a Portland rally that was dubbed the "Obama Mass." However, reports about the racial vitriol of Obama's former church, Trinity United Church of Christ and his mentor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and comments by his pro-abortion wife Michelle that she was proud of her country for the first time, damaged Obama's momentum, but did not derail his insurgent march to victory.
Clinton, however, has not yet formally dropped out of the race. Theoretically she could still be in a position for the nomination, in the off-chance that some serious unforeseen event should occur in the coming months, prompting super-delegates to switch their loyalties en masse from Obama to Clinton.
