SACRAMENTO, May 16, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - As pro-family groups mobilize California voters to create a constitutional amendment during the November general election that would invalidate yesterday’s state Supreme Court support for same-sex “marriage,” Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined state Democrats in praise of yesterday’s decision and pledged to oppose a constitutional amendment preserving the traditional definition of marriage.

“I respect the Court's decision and as Governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling,” said Schwarzenegger in an official statement yesterday.”

Schwarzenegger’s statement unites him with the wave of Democratic support for yesterday’s decision.

Characteristic of many same-sex “marriage” advocates, California Assembly Speaker, Karen Bass, contended that yesterday’s ruling was part of a positive trend to overcome the sort of discrimination men and women of color once suffered.

“We are delighted with today’s State Supreme Court ruling allowing marriage equality in California. It is a true testament to advancing equality and to recognizing the right of all Californians to build a future with the person they love.”

“We recently lost Mildred Loving, the woman whose marriage to a man of another race ushered in the Supreme Court ruling that made marriage colorblind. Today’s ruling is another important reminder that love will overcome.”

Similarily, Chair of the California Democratic Party, Art Torres, deemed the battle to establish same-sex “marriages” a “crucial civil rights issue” and pledged to “the divisive and discriminatory proposed constitutional amendment that would take away marriage equality for same-sex couples.”
