San Francisco Catholic Charities Director Contributes to Campaign to Defeat Pro-Marriage Ballot Measure
By Hilary White
SAN FRANCISCO, November 4, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A high-level official of the Catholic archdiocese of San Francisco made personal donations to a campaign to promote homosexual “marriage,” it has been revealed. Brian Cahill, the Executive Director of San Francisco Catholic Charities donated US $500.00 to the “No on Proposition 8” campaign, which is being voted on today.
Proposition 8 is a proposed state constitutional amendment for the general election ballot that would add a new section to the state constitution stating “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
The online California Catholic Daily reports that Cahill made the donation to the campaign group “No on 8; Equality for All” on August 5th this year, according to political contribution records on file with the California Secretary of State. This was done despite the statement from the California Catholic bishops who wrote that they “strongly encourage Catholics to provide both the financial support and the volunteer efforts needed for the passage of Proposition 8.”
The blogging California priest, Fr. John Malloy, commented that he is unsurprised and added that in addition to Cahill’s contribution, Jesuit Fr. Cameron Ayers of St. Agnes parish in San Francisco contributed $100 to defeat the measure.
Fr. Malloy wrote that the donations are “not surprising at all” since Fr. Ayers led his parish contingent in the 2005 San Francisco "Gay Pride" parade.
“Why do our bishops expect their flocks to listen to them when they are not only ignored, but defied, by their own priests and employees?” Malloy wrote.
During his tenure at Catholic Charities, Brian Cahill has consistently championed the homosexualist activist cause. In 2006, Cahill, publicly opposed requests that the agency move to conform itself to Catholic teaching on the issue of homosexuals adopting children.
Cahill repudiated a statement by archdiocesan spokesman Maurice Healy who said that the archdiocese would be conforming itself to the teaching of the Catholic Church “on marriage and family life” which “precludes these kinds of adoptions.”
Cahill, however, revealed a deep rift in the archdiocese over issues of sexuality when he said that Healy does not speak for Catholic Charities or for Archbishop Niederauer. Cahill said, “Mr. Healy is, A, mistaken, B, doesn't speak for Catholic Charities and, frankly, it's clear to me that he's not speaking for the archbishop these days.
“Catholic teaching is paramount,” Cahill said. “Equally paramount are the best interests of the vulnerable children that we serve.”
Brian Cahill, as Executive Director of Catholic Charities, is responsible for hiring Glen Motola as Director of Programs and Services of San Francisco Catholic Charities. Motola is an active homosexual who is living with a man with whom he has adopted a child. Cahill has praised "loving" homosexual households in various local publications.
