U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Launches New Stem Cell Research and Anti-Abortion Ads
By Thaddeus M. Baklinski
WASHINGTON, September 5, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has released four new print ads, two addressing stem cell research and two focusing on abortion.
The ads were initially published in the Capitol Hill newspaper, Roll Call, and were distributed at the Democratic Convention in Denver and at the Republican Convention in Minneapolis/St. Paul, by pro-life groups.
The stem cell research ads highlight scientific advances using adult stem cells that are making embryonic stem cells obsolete.
One ad shows a commuter running for a train, and asks: "Science is moving on. Isn't it time for public policy to get on board?"
The second ad, titled "Adult Stem Cell Research. Let's Find Cures We Can All Live With", explains advances being made in treatment using adult stem cells and directs readers to further information available at the website of the Coalition of Americans for Research Ethics (http://www.stemcellresearch.org/).
The pro-life ads reinforce the Church's teaching against abortion and back up the recently released U.S. Bishops fact sheet called "Respect for Unborn Human Life: The Church's Constant Teaching", which was published in response to the recent misleading remarks and misrepresentations of Catholic Church teaching on abortion by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, in an August 24 interview on NBC's Meet the Press.
One anti-abortion ad features a red stop sign, but with the word "GO" instead of "STOP," and reads: "You can't reduce abortions by promoting abortions. If you agree, oppose the 'Freedom of Choice Act'." The ad calls on the U.S. Congress to oppose the Act, which would eliminate current laws regulating abortion and provide abortion access at taxpayer's expense.
The other anti-abortion ad, developed by the Second Look Project (http://www.secondlookproject.org) says, "The human heart begins to beat at 22 days. Roe v. Wade says a doctor can stop it for the next 244....Have we gone too far?"
The ads are available free of charge to download and print at: http://www.usccb.org/prolife/media
The full text of "Respect for Unborn Human Life: The Church's Constant Teaching" is available online at http://www.usccb.org/prolife/constantchurchteaching.shtml.
