Spanish Medical Expert: Damage to Women Caused by Abortion is Scientifically Proven
By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman
GUATEMALA, February 17, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - An eminent Spanish biologist and bioethicist recently gave an interview in Guatemala stating that science has proven the damaging effects of abortion on the victim's mother.
Dr. Natalia Lopez Moratalla has a master's degree in bioethics and a doctorate in biology, and is the former director of the Interfaculty Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Navarra Medical School in Spain. She currently acts as an advisor to Spain's parliamentary subcommittee studying the reform of the nation's abortion law.
She has authored the books "Parent-Child Communication During Pregnancy: The Bond of Attachment", and "The Female Brain and the Male Brain", and co-authored "The First Fifteen Days of a Human Life", all in Spanish.
In an exclusive interview with Prensa Libre, Lopez Moratalla stated unequivocally that she is against all abortion, "because scientifically it has been demonstrated that human life begins with conception. Pregnancy develops a bond of attachment to the baby in the brain of the mother. Nature prepares her for that. There is scientific documentation of the damage that women suffer because of abortion."
Among the damages caused by abortion, are "drug addiction and suicide," said Lopez Moratalla, who also listed "brain damage, like that suffered by war veterans or those who have had a dramatic accident. Emotional memory is blocked." She went on to explain, "This doesn't happen to all women, but those who suffer from it tend to have another abortion because they must return to the scene again and again." She also said that in come cases, "They end up committing suicide."
Asked about women who want to have an abortion, Lopez Moratalla said that such women "are always pressured, because the father of the child has abandoned her or because she doesn't have the economic resources to care for it."
She also told Prensa Libre that pregnancy is "positive for the health of the mother" and that abortions are fundamentally caused by societies dominated by "machismo."
"Experience worldwide shows that if the woman receives help and options, she will never do it (obtain an abortion)," she said. "There is no right to an abortion. The damage done to the mother is caused by a 'macho' society; the man will never have to have one."
