SPAIN, February 27, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Eluana Englaro, a comatose Italian woman whose father dehydrated and starved her to death last month, would not have died if she had been living in Israel, according to Liberty Forum (Forum Libertas), a Spanish pro-life news service.
“In Israel, the law would have prevented Eluana’s death,” writes Liberty Forum, which notes that while the Jewish country allows passive euthanasia under certain conditions, those conditions “do not include patients in a vegetative state nor those cases that require the suspension of feeding and hydration.”
Liberty Forum contrasts the treatment given to Englaro to that given to former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who has been in a coma since 2006. Unlike Englaro, the law protects him from being dehydrated and starved to death. Sharon continues to receive care in an Israeli hospital.
Moreover, Sharon is receiving physical therapy to prevent the deterioration that reportedly occurred in the extremities of Englaro.
“The comparison is interesting. A country without a Christian tradition possesses legislation regarding euthanasia that approaches that which is desired by the Church in Europe and in Spain.” concludes Liberty Forum.
