Obama Revokes Abortion Funding Policy, Will Fund Overseas Abortions with Taxpayer Money
By John Jalsevac
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – One day after the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, President Obama has signed an order to lift the Mexico City policy, a Reagan-era policy that prohibits taxpayer funds from going to organizations that promote or perform abortions overseas.
Population Action International, a pro-abortion group, praised Obama's decision, saying in a statement that it will "save women's lives around the world."
"Women's health has been severely impacted by the cutoff of assistance," said the group. "President Obama's actions will help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, abortions and women dying from high-risk pregnancies because they don't have access to family planning."
Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelse, however, strongly criticized Obama's move, saying: "America should respond to women's needs in developing countries with real assistance that also upholds their dignity, not by promoting or paying for abortions. I am disappointed by President Obama’s decision to bypass the will of American taxpayers and promote the radical agenda of Planned Parenthood and the abortion lobby."
It was widely anticipated that Obama would sign the executive order yesterday, on the 36th anniversary of Roe. In 1993 former president Bill Clinton had revoked the policy on that day, while George Bush reinstated the policy on his first day in office in 2001, the day before the Roe anniversary.
Instead of signing the order yesterday, however, Obama instead issued a statement defending Roe, while speaking of the need to find “common ground” in the “divisive” and "sensitive" abortion debate.
In yesterday’s statement Obama explained, “I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.” Nevertheless, he said, “we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.”
While the decision not to revoke the policy yesterday was cautiously interpreted by some as evidence that Obama may not be as extreme on abortion as he has promised to be, and would not force taxpayers to pay for abortions, pro-life and pro-abortion organizations did not have to wait long for Obama to prove his solidly pro-abortion credentials.
"President Obama not long ago told the American people that he would support policies to reduce abortions, but today he is effectively guaranteeing more abortions by funding groups that promote abortion as a method of population control," said Douglas Johnson, legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee.
The Mexico City policy was considered by many to be one of the most effective pro-life policies of the Bush and Reagan administrations. International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), one of the most pro-abortion organizations in the world, told the BBC today that under the Bush administration, thanks to the Mexico City Policy, the organisation had lost more than $100m (£73m) in funding.
Contrary to Mainstream Media, Hundreds of Thousands at Giant Washington March For Life
Nellie Gray says larger number this year a reaction to Obama election
By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman and Steve Jalsevac
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Hundreds of thousands of pro-life demonstrators marched through the U.S. capital Thursday, protesting the deaths of almost 50 million unborn children by surgical abortion since the practice was legalized nationwide in 1973.
The March for Life, held on the anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision that struck down state laws nationwide, attracted large groups from around the nation, including Catholic dioceses and parishes, organizations of priests and laity, and various pro-family and pro-life organizations. Well over half of the participants were under thirty years old, including a very high percentage of adolescents.
March for Life chief organizer Nellie Gray told LifeSiteNews the crowd definitely appeared larger than normal this year. She said there were "definitely over 200,000" participants and noted that one television station reported that there were 300,000 participants in the march. Gray also said the march normally takes about one and a half hours to pass one point, but this year it took over two and a half hours, indicating a large increase in numbers.
Asked what she attributed the massive attendance Gray responded, "I don't think there is any doubt that it was in reaction to the election and as they started to see the issues in the news they felt compelled to come out."
Senators, congressmen, pro-life leaders and members of various religious traditions addressed the crowd before the march began. The religious leaders included Rabbi Yehuda Levin, Metropolitan Jonah of the Orthodox Church of America, Cardinals Justin Rigali and Sean O'Malley and numerous Catholic bishops.
Luke Robinson, an African-American pastor from Maryland, stirred the crowd with a passionate speech calling on Obama to end the "slaughter of the innocent preborn," especially blacks, who suffer 34% of abortions in comparison to their 12% representation in the population (see LifeSiteNews coverage at http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/jan/09012311.html).
Although the March's speakers made respectful comments about President Barack Obama, whose administration began two days earlier, they called upon him to abandon his extreme pro-abortion beliefs and policies, and to embrace the right to life for all.
Despite the election of Obama, who most pro-life leaders at the march emphasized to LifeSiteNews is the most pro-abortion president in American history, many participants expressed hope for the future, speculating that the new president might repent of his past and convert. Others expressed deep concern about the consequences if Obama implements the policies he has espoused during his brief political career, both in the United States and in foreign countries.
Frank Padilla, founder of the international pro-family organization Couples for Christ, spoke to LifeSiteNews about the "global attempt to destroy the family, destroy marriage, and destroy life". In the Philippines, where the group began, pro-life groups are fighting a "reproductive health" bill that would fund and promote the distribution of contraceptives, including those that cause abortion.
He added that there is "very great concern" about the election of Obama, given the influence of the United States on foreign countries. However, he added, that he believes "at the same time we see that it is a blessing, because people are now much more aware, and we know that we need to educate our people, because we know there are so many Catholics who really don't know what the issues are about."

"So, that should be the blessing, and I think that this will be the start of greater pro-life activism, and work, not just in our country but in many parts of the world."
Fr. Aquinas Glibo, a Dominican priest, was present with numerous young seminarians, under the banner, "Dominicans for Life."
"I think the pro-life movement in the United States has becoming a rallying point for a lot of young religious," said Fr. Aquinas, who also stated that the Dominican Order is seeing a resurgence of vocations and a stronger spirit of orthodoxy. He also said that he preaches against abortion in his parish in New York City.
Participants held signs with pro-life slogans, and many sang. Some held photos of aborted babies. The Genocide Awareness Project, an organization that shows large photos of aborted children in displays at universities and on roadsides, was present as well, with a chilling display showing the victims of abortion. It also had one of its large Truth trucks along the march route.

Pro-Life Leaders Condemn Obama's Funding of International Abortion Groups
WASHINGTON, DC, January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The following joint statement by 22 of the nation’s pre-eminent pro-life organizations was issued today in response to President Obama’s signing of an executive order revoking the Mexico City policy. The Mexico City policy is a Reagan-era policy that forbids taxpayer monies from funding organizations that promote or perform abortions overseas:
“We are distressed that in the midst of the country's greatest economic crisis since the Depression, this Administration is going to allocate millions of taxpayer dollars to abort children in developing countries.
“Reversing the Mexico City Policy is nothing less than a bailout of the abortion industry, taking money away from grassroots organizations that truly help women and children in order to fund two radical abortion lobbyists in particular – International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International.
“By forcing abortion down the throats of indigenous peoples throughout the world, who want real aid, not abortion, we are needlessly antagonizing potential allies, undermining the President's promise of respectful international cooperation of just two days ago.
“We truly hope that this is not the first step toward the new Administration becoming the most pro-abortion Administration in history.”

On Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Obama Issues Statement Defending “Right to Choose”
By John Jalsevac
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Yesterday hundreds of thousands of pro-life advocates convened for the annual March for Life in Washington D.C., to commemorate the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton cases that legalized abortion in the United States.
At the same time, newly-sworn in President Barack Obama defied expectations that he would sign an executive order revoking the Mexico City policy, which prohibits taxpayer monies from going to organizations that promote or perform abortions overseas. Instead Obama postponed doing so for a day, and released a statement defending Roe v. Wade and calling for “common ground” in the “sensitive and often divisive” abortion debate.
“On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters,” said Obama. “I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.”
He continued, “While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.”
Today, however, Obama is set to sign an executive order rescinding the Mexico City Policy, ensuring that taxpayer monies will be spent on promoting and performing abortions overseas and initiating what is widely expected to be the most pro-abortion administration in U.S. history.
At March, Black Pastor Warns Obama not to Preside over “Genocide” of American Blacks
WASHINGTON, DC, January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The most well received speech at the March for Life this year was that of an African American pastor from Frederick Maryland. Pastor Luke Robinson began noting that the election of the first African American President of the United States was a fulfillment of “part” of the “Dream” of Dr. Marin Luther King Jr.
Speaking of the inauguration of the “first black President” of the United States, Pastor Robinson explained: “So many African Americans and other folks cried and shouted because the inauguration was part of the deferred dream come true.” But, he added, “we come here to deal with some unfinished business as it relates to the ‘dream’.”
Then, using Barack Obama’s own rhetoric, Pastor Robinson used the phrase “We need change now more than ever” which would accentuate the rest of his talk.
“We are calling on the President of Change, President Barack Obama,” he said, “to be an agent of change as it relates to the lives of over one million children who will be slaughtered in this, his first year as President, by a horrible practice called abortion and ‘a woman’s right to choose’.”
The most striking portion of Robinson’s speech came as he begged Obama not to preside over the genocide of African Americans. “We need change Mr. President because every day about 4000 babies die by abortion. Every day Mr. President, people with your ethnic background any my ethnic background die in astounding numbers. Abortion is the number one killer of African Americans in this country.”
“We make up about 12% of the population and about 34% of all abortions are black babies. In the last 36 years over 17 million African American babies have died by abortion alone. We need to change this picture. We need to stop this slaughter of the innocent preborn.
“Please Mr. President, be that agent of change that can commute the sentence of over 1400 African American children and over 3000 children from other ethnic groups sentenced to die every day in this country by abortion.”
“We need change and we need it now.”
“I pray with so many others,” he said, “that your administration will preside over the end to abortion and to the black genocide in America.”
“At the conclusion of your term in office, may it never be said that you presided over the largest slaughter of innocent children in the history of the country and that African Americans became an ever increasing minority under your hand.”
Italian Performer Sings Story of Conversion from Homosexuality at Music Festival
Homosexual activists enraged; complaint filed with European Court of Human Rights
By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman
SANREMO, ITALY, January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Italian singer Giuseppe Povia is making waves in Italy with his new song recounting the conversion of a homosexual to heterosexuality.
The piece, "Lucas Was Gay," which is to be performed for the first time at the Sanremo Festival in Sanremo, Italy on February 21, tells the true story of Luca di Tolve, a young man who recently spoke of his conversion in the Italian newspaper Il Giornale.
Tolve attributes his former homosexuality to the divorce of his parents during his childhood, when his father left. "I remained alone in a feminine environment, playing with dolls. It is a mistake to believe that people are born gay," he said in the interview. "You fall in love with a man because that is what you would have wanted to be."
"Homosexuals experience a frenetic emotional nomadism," he went on to say. "It is understandable, like anyone, they look for something different from themselves. If in the other they find only something similar, the relationship can't be more than fleeting and compulsive. Stability and fidelity can't exist in the gay world."
Povia stated last December that he has converted two homosexual friends to heterosexuality, both of whom are now married, and said that "one is not born homosexual, but is converted to it." He is also known to have participated in the 2007 Family Day in Rome, organized to defend the right to life and family values.
Homosexual activists, enraged by Tolve's account and Povia's song, have accused Tolve of lying, and have begun a Facebook account to bring together those who wish to prevent Povia from singing at the Sanremo Festival. The organization "Arcigay" has reportedly threatened to disrupt the event.
In addition, European Parliament Deputy Vittorio Agnoleto has reportedly presented the case to the European Court of Human Rights and has asked the Parliament to review the song, claiming that its lyrics constitute a violation of the rights of homosexuals.
Five Thousand Gather at Minnesota March for Life
By Thaddeus M. Baklinski
ST. PAUL, Minn., January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Thousands of pro-life Minnesotans gathered on the steps of the Capitol building on Thursday for the annual rally to mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The participants urged lawmakers to retain and to institute new laws to protect the unborn and to offer support for pregnant women in need.
Bill Poehler, communications director for Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL), the organizers of the rally, said nearly five thousand attended this year's march. They were warmly welcomed by pro-life Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who told the crowd that he was proud to stand with them in “the noble cause of affirming the culture of life.”
"We are going to have to continue to work, because if we can change the hearts and change the minds, then the laws will follow," Pawlenty said to the enthusiastic multitude.
Pawlenty also said he would urge the Legislature to maintain full funding for Positive Alternatives, a program that helps fund programs offering abortion alternatives and support for pregnant women and their children. “We should all be able to come together to promote positive alternatives to abortion in Minnesota and America,” Pawlenty said.
The Hon. Norm Coleman, a former senator, spoke to the thousands of pro-life citizens, saying that Roe v. Wade “compromised” the right to life guaranteed in the Declaration of Independence, and that one cannot have liberty and the pursuit of happiness without life.
"A society that values happiness and freedom of choice over life is headed in the wrong direction," Coleman declared. He pointed out that “every nation is defined by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens. Who is more vulnerable that the unborn?”
MCCL Legislative Associate Jordan Bauer presented the MCCL's 2009 Legislative Agenda, proposals the group hopes will be passed in law this year, to the huge crowd.
He explained the main points of the Legislative Agenda which include saving the Positive Alternatives program from funding cutbacks, prohibiting coercion of women to abort, banning the saline injection abortion procedure, banning taxpayer funding of abortions, and defending the existing pro-life laws, which include the Woman’s Right to Know law, the Parental Notification law and the Unborn Child Pain Prevention Act.
“No woman should ever be forced into abortion—not by relatives, the child’s father or abortionists,” Bauer said. “We have legislation this year to stop coerced abortions. Abortion is not a choice, because no baby would ever choose to die.”
Other officials who expressed their support for the Minnesota March for Life were Lieutenant Gov. Carol Molnau, who offered words of support and encouragement to the state’s large pro-life movement, and Sen. Michelle Fischbach, R-Paynesville, who said, "I know there is a big focus on finances this year ... but there's always room to support the culture of life in Minnesota,"
A press release from MCCL said that dozens of pro-life state legislators were in attendance at the March for Life. In addition greetings were read from U.S. Reps. John Kline, Erik Paulsen, Michele Bachmann, Collin Peterson and James Oberstar.

Operation Rescue Holds Vigil Outside Tiller Abortuary on Roe Anniversary
WICHITA, KS, January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Operation Rescue led a candlelight prayer vigil outside the nation’s largest late-term abortion mill, Women's Health Care Services, on the 36th memorial of Roe v. Wade.
As about 150 pro-lifers gathered for prayer, double the number from the previous year. Troubled abortionist George Tiller slipped out the gate during the rally and apparently went home.
"In previous years, Tiller has posted defiant banners, held rallies, even offered free abortions. There was none of that this year," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "He tried to simply sneak out of his abortion mill without anyone noticing."
Tiller currently faces 19 criminal charges of having committed illegal late-term abortions in 2003. Recently Operation Rescue revealed new allegations of criminality at Tiller's abortion mill when it released the results of an undercover investigation that showed WHCS employees intentionally underestimating fetal ages and viability in order to justify illegal late-term abortions.
After the group finished their vigil at Tiller's abortion clinic, they adjourned to Operation Rescue's National headquarters for a premiere showing of the new movie "22 Weeks."

Man Intentionally Drives SUV into St. Paul Planned Parenthood
By Tim Waggoner
ST. PAUL, Minn, January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Yesterday morning a man suffering from mental illness intentionally drove his family's SUV into the front doors of a St. Paul's Planned Parenthood abortuary. Yesterday marked the 36th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade court decision that legalized abortion in the U.S.
Matthew Derosia of Cottage Grove has been named as the driver of the SUV and has been arrested and placed in Ramsey County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.
The vehicle hit the only Planned Parenthood abortion center in the state at about 7:30 yesterday morning, reports the Associated Press. There was minor damage done to the brickwork and the front door, and the several employees in the center were not harmed.
Planned Parenthood spokesperson Kathi Di Nicola arrived when Derosia was exiting his SUV and said he was very "agitated" and was holding a crucifix, saying, "Shut down this Auschwitz."
Di Nicola said, "Nothing violent like this has happened in recent memory here." Police spokesman Peter Panos said they are accustomed to demonstrations on the anniversary of Roe, "but someone doing actual damage is very, very rare."
Brian Gibson of Pro-Life Ministries, who regularly protests in front of the facility, condemned Derosia's actions: "We're out here trying to protect the unborn from being harmed and women from being harmed, but also we don't want to see harm to anyone - including those who work at Planned Parenthood."
According to Derosia's mother, her son had been suffering from a severe mental illness resulting in him experiencing loud voices in his head.
"I'm not saying what he did was right at all. It was a terrible thing to do. But Matt talks to God, he listens to God, and he thinks God wanted him to do this," said Georjean Derosia, whose son has been committed 12 times since 2004 to several mental illness facilities.
She said Derosia's passion for saving the unborn started while working as a housekeeper in a newborn intensive care unit.
"He saw all these little babies that made it and he heard all these horror stories about the babies that made it in the trash can making noise. It made him sick," said Georjean. "He worries about these babies that get aborted and he obsesses on it."
Georjean said the last thing her son told her the night before the incident was, "You know Mom, bad things happen, when good men do nothing."
Desrosia is likely to be formally charged today.
New York Appellate Court Approves Recognition of Out-of-State Same-sex "Marriages"
By Thaddeus M. Baklinski
NEW YORK, January 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In the latest instance of a court decision imposing recognition of same-sex "marriage" without enacted legislation by an elected government, an appellate court ruled today that the "marriages" of homosexual couples that took place outside of New York must be recognized by the state.
The decision was made in the case of Lewis v. Department of Civil Service and involved taxpayers who sued the state Department of Civil Service (DCS) for recognizing same-sex spouses of state employees "married" out of state for purposes of health insurance benefits.
The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), a legal non-profit organization, filed the suit on behalf of New York taxpayers, and challenged DCS's authority to grant health insurance benefits to "married" homosexual couples without legislation in place permitting them to do so.
The appellate court based its decision on a previous court decision, the case of Martinez v. County of Monroe, which ruled that since the "New York Legislature has not enacted legislation to prohibit the recognition of same-sex marriages," Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY, was required to extend health benefits to college employee Patricia Martinez, who was "married" to her homosexual partner in Canada.
The homosexual activist group Lambda Legal praised the appellate court decision and said it was an implementation of NY Governor Paterson's May 2008 "directive" instructing all state agencies to respect out–of–state "marriages" of same–sex couples.
Governor Paterson's "recognition of same-sex marriage" directive was challenged in the New York Supreme Court in September 2008 but the suit was subsequently dismissed.

RE: Biden Receives Standing Ovation at Catholic Mass after Receiving Communion
http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/jan/09012013.html
Dear Sir,
What a sacrilege. Where was the Pastor? Where was the Bishop? Do the Parishioners have no shame? I am once again thoroughly disgusted with people who call themselves Catholic, but do not embrace and practice the pro-life teachings of our beautiful Faith. Parishioners should be calling for the removal of that Pastor and their Bishop. The silence of the Pastor, the Bishop and the parishioners speaks volumes. We should question why these types of actions continue to occur without the swift and appropriate response needed from the hierarchy of the Church.
Our Lord is watching this very closely with a sad heart. We should all fear His swift and appropriate judgement.

There is a terrible irony here, in which a black president desires to remove all reasonable deterrents to abortion.
Surely he must know that American blacks who comprise 12-13% of the US population have at least twice that percentage of all abortions in this country, which is a demographic nightmare for them. To increase it even further through FOCA strikes me as being genocidal.
It condemns black Americans to a permanent and shrinking minority status as the whites and Hispanics overtake them. If he cares about African American children, he should be pursuing policies which raise them up, not tear them down. The best FOCA would be to give their parents choice in selecting schools from K-12 grades, a strategy which has been proven to work wherever it's been tried.
The worst deprivation is not material poverty, it is being forced into a system which ensures intellectual and spiritual poverty. Until the president starts to care more about inner-city children than the votes of self-absorbed teacher's unions who eschew competition, the current unconscionable situation will not change. If private schools are better for his daughters than public schools, how can he deny public school children what they need most? Freedom of school choice would surely be the most productive, far-reaching and moral "CHANGE" he can institute, a reform which would improve the lot of every American child and family.
Yours truly,
R.J.Shalhoub

So many stories boil down to the same, sad truth; people calling themselves something they are not.
Obama calls himself a Christian; he is not. No follower of Christ can possibly promote the killing of innocent children. Christ is a real person, alive today and forever. There is only one Christ, and therefore if so many claim to follow a totally different Christ from the one we read of in the Gospels and worship in Holy Mass, they are evidently following somebody (or something) else.
Vice-president Biden calls himself a catholic; he is not. He is presently in a state of excommunion, as a result of his public promotion of abortion. Whether or not he goes to Mass and causes scandal by receiving the Body and Blood of our Lord makes no difference. He has placed himself outside the Church by his own words and actions, and is therefore no longer a Catholic.
The group "Catholics for Choice" call themselves Catholics; they are not. They were repudiated and excommunicated many years ago by Pope John Paul II. This group of bloodthirsty, abortion-loving maniacs calling themselves Catholics is as meaningless as John McCain calling himself President of the United States.
People ought to wake up to the hard truth that there are many imposters out there, using the name of Christ for their evil ends, and usurping the term "catholic", twisting it to mean exactly the opposite of what it really does; i.e. fidelity to the Holy Father in Rome.
Yours in Christ and Mary,
Christopher Fleming

Dear Editor,
I am strongly pro-life. In speaking with my pro-abortion friends I have come to realize they too decry abortion and believe the embryo is a living person. They say they shouldn't interfere with another's "choice." In the future I will ask them, "What is the difference between aborting an embryo and infanticide?"
Thank you, LifeSiteNews, for your great witness to the truth.
