SANTO DOMINGO, January 29, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, called President Obama’s decision to fund international abortion providers and lobbyists by repealing the Mexico City Policy a “disgrace for the United States.”

Cardinal Rodriguez said it was a “political contradiction” for Mr. Obama “to decide to leave Iraq, where so many people have died, and now give an incentive to death in the United States and the world,” as reported by the Dominican news service Listin Diario.

“Mr. Barack Obama is radically mistaken, so hopefully he will have … opportunity to reflect on the fact that that is not the way to begin a moral reconstruction of the United States,” said the cardinal.

The Cardinal said that repealing the Mexico City policy would ultimately “further lower the level of morality of the United States.”

As for the Dominican Republic, Cardinal Rodriguez said that the repercussions would be grave because of the many pro-abortion institutions in the country.  According to the Catholic News Agency, pro-abortion Dominican organizations such as “Profamilia” and “Mujer y Salud” announced recently that they would soon request U.S. funding.

He encouraged the Dominican Republic to strengthen its morals in the face of growing pressure from the abortion lobby.

“Let’s try to work precisely so that our children have a healthy environment, a place where they can live peacefully, and that they are received by a society that can educate them,” he said.

Cardinal Nicolas Lopez is a leading champion of the rights of the unborn in Latin America.  Thanks in part to the cardinal’s bold campaigning, abortion remains illegal in the Dominican Republic.
