Alaskan Student’s Associations Call for “Mandatory, Comprehensive” Sex-Ed

JUNEAU, Alaska, June 15, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Alaska Association of Student Governments has called for “mandatory” and “comprehensive” sexual education for high school. They plan to bring the proposal to the state legislature, where, if enacted into law, private schools and homeschooled children will be forced to enter the program into their curricula, reports the Catholic Anchor.
Archbishop Roger Schwietz of Anchorage expressed concern regarding the proposal, pointing to a lack of clarity regarding the rights of parents who did not want their children exposed to such “comprehensive” education.
“We operate on the principles that the parents have the first right and responsibility toward the education of their children which includes education in the areas of sexuality,” Archbishop Schwietz said.
“As the Catholic Church,” he added, “we would not support some kind of law or policy that would mandate that each child has to be present in courses of sex education as this resolution reportedly describes it.”
