VATICAN, June 22, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Vatican News Service has reported on the letter from the bishops of Peru to the bishops of Canada, in which the bishops assert that that the Canadian bishops’ official development arm, Development and Peace (D&P), is funding pro-abortion groups in their country. “Aid for Food and Medicines, Not for Birth Control, Needed in Latin America,” reads the headline of the radio program’s webpage.

The program consisted of an interview with Alejandro Bermudes, director of ACI Prensa, a large Latin American Catholic news agency, who observed that “instead of sending money to fight the food crisis … [money] is going now to promote abortion and birth control among that same people who are not only not reproducing, but dying.”

“The bishops in Peru, as well as the bishops in Bolivia and Mexico, have expressed their concern that the Committee for Development and Peace … has been providing … significant financial support to organization that actively are involved in the promotion of abortion,” he said.

In their letter, the Peruvian bishop pointed out that each of three groups funded by D&P “either explicitly endorses abortion, and/or contraception, either by name or by its various euphemisms like ‘sexual and reproductive rights’ or some derivation thereof.”

“We respectfully would like to formally request that the funding for the pro-abortion groups in Peru by the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace be halted,” they said.

Over the last several months LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) has documented over 20 groups that promote abortion and/or contraception that receive funding from the Canadian bishops’ development arm. (To read all of the evidence, click here)
