MONTPELIER, Vermont, March 20, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Following a week of hearings, Vermont’s senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to introduce a bill legalizing same-sex “marriage” to the state legislature.

The committee voted 5-0 on Friday to support S.115, which would redefine marriage as “the legally recognized union of two people.”

Vermonters both supporting and opposing the bill scrambled to attend the last days of the emotionally charged debate, and at least 1,000 people converged on the Statehouse Wednesday evening to discuss the bill.

Republican Gov. Jim Douglas has said he opposes the bill, but did not divulge whether he plans to veto.

The full Senate is due to examine the bill next week.  If the legislation is approved, Vermont would become the 3rd state after Massachusetts and Connecticut to legalize same-sex “marriage,” and the first to do so through the legislative process as opposed to an activist court ruling.
