Washington DC Approves Same-Sex "Marriage" Recognition
By Thaddeus M. Baklinski
Washington, DC, May 6, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an almost unanimous vote. Washington DC will now recognize same-sex "marriages" performed in other US states.
The District of Columbia is not a state, and has to have many of its laws cleared through the US Congress before they can be enacted.
Washington DC's city council voted twelve to one in favor of the measure at a meeting yesterday. It was reported that the sole "no" vote was by former mayor Councilman Marion Barry, who said he decided to take a stand with the "ministers who stand on the moral compass of God. It has been a very agonizing and difficult decision. I feel comfortable with this position because I know where my heart is."
Barry told reporters after the meeting, "All hell is going to break loose. We may have a civil war. The black community is just adamant against this. What you've got to understand is 98 percent of my constituents are black and we don't have but a handful of openly gay residents."
A majority of African-Americans are against same-sex "marriage." According to a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, support for homosexual "marriage" among African-Americans stands at 42% while opposition is at 51%.
Councilman Barry confirmed that "At least 70 percent of those who express themselves to me about this are opposed to anything dealing with this issue. The ministers think it is a sin, and I have to be sensitive to that."
The legislation will be sent to Washington, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, who supports same-sex "marriage," for approval, before being placed before Congress.
