May 29, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Tuesday as a featured guest during Leno’s final week of the show.  During a brief segment of the interview, Leno asked Gov. Schwarzenegger for his thoughts on the California Supreme Court decision to uphold Proposition 8, reached early this week.

Voted in by a 52% majority in the November 2008 California election, Proposition 8 amended the California constitution to include the clause: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

Responding to Leno, Gov. Schwarzenegger said, “Well, as I sent out the regular press statement saying that we, you know, we'll uphold the law. We respect the court's decision, and, you know, I think that this is not over, this decision, because I think they're going to be back. In a year or two, they will be back again with another initiative trying to get it. You know, eventually it's going to be overturned.  I’m sure of that.”

In a press release put out earlier on Tuesday, Schwarzenegger affirmed the Court’s decision, while also expressing his disappointment:

“While I believe that one day either the people or courts will recognize gay marriage, as Governor of California I will uphold the decision of the California Supreme Court. Regarding the 18,000 marriages that took place prior to Proposition 8’s passage, the Court made the right decision in keeping them intact. I also want to encourage all those responding to today’s Court decision to do so peacefully and lawfully.”
