VIDEO: Pro-Lifers Overflow the Streets of Madrid at Huge Pro-Life March
By Patrick B. Craine
MADRID, Spain, October 20, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Numerous videos of footage covering Saturday's pro-life march in Madrid are available on Youtube, showing the massive crowd and their jubilant passion for the cause of life.
The crowd of pro-life demonstrators, gathered under a massive banner proclaiming "Every life matters," came out to protest a law proposed by the predominantly Catholic country's Socialist government that would allow abortion-on-demand up to 14 weeks, and allow girls from 16 years on to get an abortion without parental involvement.
Estimates of the number of protesters ranged widely, from 250,000 by the police to 1.5 million by a spokesman of the organizers. The Madrid government estimated the crowd at 1.2 million. Approximately 600 buses and several planes were chartered in order to bring people in from other cities.
The Youtube videos, primarily media coverage in Spanish, include bird's-eye and ground-level shots of the crowd overflowing the streets, brief segments showing the activities of different groups of demonstrators, and interviews with participants.
On Friday, Spain's ABC newspaper published an opinion poll indicating that 42 percent of Spanish citizens believe there is no overwhelming popular support for the new legislation, while 38 percent believe there is.
According to Archbishop Braulio Rodriguez of Toledo, commenting before the march, the new law "has little to do with sexual health," treating abortion "as if it were a right." "Abortion is repulsive to reason," he said.
"Lawmakers in Europe often fall into a sort of contradiction," he continued. "On the one hand they want to broaden the individual rights of the person but on the other they work less for other rights such as the right to be born, the right to life and the right to not go hungry and to employment."
