Irish Planned Parenthood Affiliate Receives as Much as 55 Per Cent of Funding From Taxpayer

DUBLIN, August 11, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Documents published by the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA), an abortionist organisation affiliated with International Planned Parenthood, show that the group may receive as much as 55 per cent of its funding from the Irish taxpayer, in a country with an officially pro-life constitution.

Financial statements show that €1.5 million ($US 1.93 million) was given to the group by the Irish government and “other grants.”

The pro-life group Youth Defence called it “simply unacceptable” that Irish taxpayers are directly supporting the abortion industry by funding IFPA. Íde Nic Mhathúna commented, “None of this seems to matter to the Irish government who have funnelled millions towards the IFPA.

“It’s time some hard questions were asked – and answered.”

IFPA registered an income of €2,747,453 (US $3,544,186) for 2009. The statement says the group’s profits from abortion and other “reproductive health services,” listed as “net cash inflow from operating activities,” was €168,840. The statement credited the sum of €1,509,333 in their accounts from sources sited as “government and other grants.” The limited company paid salaries and benefits amounting to €1,726,083 to its 57 Irish employees.

The Irish constitution was amended by popular vote in 1983 to read: “The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.”

Although it is unclear from the IFPA statement exactly how much money the group receives from government-funded sources, the Crisis Pregnancy Agency (CPA), a government-funded service to women in unexpected pregnancies, included the IFPA in their annual report as one to which it gives money. The Crisis Pregnancy agency is part of the Irish government’s Health Service Executive (HSE) and is directly funded by the taxpayer.

CPA has been criticised for its “non-directive” approach to counselling women in crisis pregnancies, refusing to oppose abortion. In its code of ethics, the group uses the abortion industry’s language, saying it provides “non-judgmental” counselling “regarding the choices made by women who face crisis pregnancy.”

IFPA is also working steadily to undermine the legal protections for the unborn in Ireland. IFPA’s parent organisation, International Planned Parenthood Federation, boasts that IFPA has “clear strategies” to promote “abortion rights” and “access rights,” despite the fact that abortion is a criminal act in Ireland. The IFPA operates 12 “pregnancy counseling centres” in Ireland.

Íde Nic Mhathúna said, “The Irish people have repeatedly rejected abortion in referenda and opinion polls, but the government is quietly shovelling sack-loads of cash into the abortion industry – and all this at a time when our economy is on its knees.”
