Malta Celebrates 32nd Pro-Life Day

VALLETTA, MALTA, February 8, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- This past Sunday, on the 32nd Pro-Life Day organized by the Malta Unborn Child Movement, members of the Maltese government and various clergy reiterated Malta's firm stand against abortion under any circumstances.
According to the Times of Malta, Foreign Minister Tonio Borg said that Malta would refuse to follow the rest of the world into an anti-life culture. He continued by expressing confidence that a proposed amendment to the Maltese constitution, stating that human life begins at conception, will be passed through bipartisan measures.
Tony Agius Decelis, speaking on behalf of the Labour Party, said that his party was against abortion under any circumstances.
Similarly, Josie-Muscat, leader of the National Action political party, said that abortion came from the erosion of values. He told Malta to set an example to the world by being in favor of the family.
At a Mass proceeding a pro-life demonstration, Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Mercieca of Malta mentioned Mother Teresa as one who not only defended human life but also assisted those most in need.
On the same day, Bishop Mario Grech of Gozo spoke in Victoria, Malta of a link between unstable families and abortion.
"Where the family is united, pregnancy is likely to be accepted and celebrated, but where the family is broken, such as in the case of divorced parents, there is a higher probability that life is refused and threatened," he said.
He continued to speak about how it was important for society to fight poverty so that no woman would consider abortion because of an inability to provide for her child.
Activities on Pro-Life Day 2010 were attended by members of the Islamic, Jewish, Hindu, and Baha'i faiths. Representatives of the government and Alternattiva Demokratika also attended.
