Commentary on February 8 News

The Duggar family is a contradiction to today's culture. My wife and I are the parents of eight children and after thirty years of parenting we can tell you that the saddest thing we hear from many good couples is that they "can't afford" more than two or three children - so little trust in providence and in the grace of their marriage.

Yes, it is admittedly often hard, but with constant effort, generosity and especially prayer, things somehow usually work out to great personal advantage. The children become the father to the mature man and woman whom the husband and wife become. Also, at the end of life there is only one thing we can take with us - our spouses and our children. Everything else is dust. But then, my wife and I were blessed with a major conversion of thinking after our first five years of deliberately childless married life. I was a card carrying member of Zero Population Growth - honest! So, we understand the pressures, the lack of support and the very real fear of being parents. Editor John-Henry Westen, a father of seven, also went through a major change in his views of life. Both of us were very different from what we are now.

The Vatican, and especially the wonderful recent Popes, have naturally been the most loved and most powerful allies of the pro-life, pro-family movements. Still, the Vatican is composed of human beings who have their flaws and divisions.  We have especially seen this in a very public way on a number of occasions during the past year. It has at times been shocking, but really, it is nothing new at all from the time of the founding of Christianity.

LifeSiteNews is doing its part, along with others, to encourage unity in the truth. That restored and strengthened unity is crucial for the whole world. However, it does require great perseverance and effort. Real love has a price, a cross. There is no way around that requirement.  The truth is often not popular, even despised - even within religious circles. And again, there is nothing new about that.
