Oregon Planned Parenthood Offers RU-486 Abortion in ‘Privacy of Their Home’

By Peter J. Smith

ASHLAND, Oregon, February 25, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Starting in March, Planned Parenthood of Southwest Oregon plans to offer RU-486 prescriptions to women seeking abortion at its clinics in Ashland and Eugene, telling them they can have chemically induced abortions surrounded by the comforts of home.

According to Oregon’s Mail Tribune, Cynthia Pappas, the local Planned Parenthood executive director, indicated that the decision was partially due to the limited availability of abortion thanks to local abortionists nearing retirement age.

“The reason people choose medication abortions is they can do this in the privacy of their own home,” Pappas told the Tribune. “That’s very important to some of our clients.”

The abortion-inducing prescription costs $500, and is designed for women 5-9 weeks pregnant. RU-486 blocks the action of progesterone, the natural hormone maintaining the rich nutrient lining of the uterus. The developing baby then starves to death as the womb’s nutrient lining disintegrates. (Click here to read more about RU-486)

Local pro-life advocates expressed concern over teenagers resorting RU-486 for an easy abortion, since Oregon requires girls under 15 to get parental consent before making medical decisions.

“I just think it’s pretty enticing for girls to zip over the Planned Parenthood during their lunch hour, and if necessary, and pick up some pills. They’ll think it’s easy. It isn’t!” said Gayle Atteberry of Oregon Right to Life to local news station KMTR.

RU-486 was made legal in the US by the Food and Drug Administration in 2000, and since then at least six American women have died of complications from medically induced abortion. Abroad, the Italian Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics in 2008 reported 16 maternal deaths associated with RU-486, leading the Italian Senate to delay sale of the abortifacient.

The Times of India reported in August 2009 that gynecologists are encountering increased incidents of menstrual problems among young women as they arbitrarily use abortifacient pills as regular forms of contraception, leading to incomplete abortions, uncontrollable bleeding, or loss of periods.

Abby Johnson, the ex-director of a Texas Planned Parenthood who recently converted to the pro-life position, revealed that Planned Parenthood has increasingly advocated more abortions to boost its profits.

“Abortion is the most lucrative part of Planned Parenthood’s operations,” Johnson told Fox News, saying their income went up when the number of abortion patients went up. That included selling chemical abortions with RU-486.

“One of the ways they were able to up the number of patients that they saw was they started doing the RU-486 chemical abortions all throughout the week,” she revealed.
