Last Day to Voice Concerns about Euthanasia to Quebec Government

By Thaddeus M. Baklinski

QUEBEC CITY, Quebec, July 16, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – On May 25, 2010 the Quebec government announced that it was soliciting feedback from Quebec citizens about whether euthanasia and assisted suicide are acceptable forms of “care.”

Citizens of Quebec have until today, July 16, 2010, to provide this feedback to the government.

The Quebec National Assembly’s special commission on “dying with dignity” asked for input from the general public on the consultation document after having heard from legal, medical, ethical, and philosophical experts in February and March.

While euthanasia and assisted suicide are prohibited under Canada’s Criminal Code, the elected officials heading up the special commission have indicated that they do not see their work being impeded by the federal law.

“All options are on the table,” said Geoffrey Kelley, the chairman of the commission and a Liberal member, according to a Le Devoir report on May 26th. “At this point, it’s really public opinion that interests us.”

Kelley stated that legislation could be enacted to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide if “the opinion and mood of Quebecers” indicated that was what they wanted.

A press release from Quebec Life Coalition urges Quebecers to act now “to remind the Quebec government that euthanasia is always wrong.”

“Whether Quebec goes down the road of euthanasia and assisted suicide is up to you. Please consider participating in the consultation in one way or another. A lot a lives, and the quality of all lives here in Quebec, are at stake,” the group says.

Submissions can still be made to the special commission by putting down one’s thoughts about euthanasia and assisted suicide in the form of a written brief, submitted by July 16 by email ([email protected]) or by mail:
