Chilean Chamber of Deputies Condemns Spain for ‘Despicable’ New Abortion Law

By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman, Latin America Correspondent

VALPARAISO, Chile, July 19, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Chilean Chamber of Deputies has issued a ringing condemnation of Spain’s new abortion law, which removes all penalties for abortions up to the 14th week of gestation and permits adolescent girls to obtain abortions without parental consent.

The law has been allowed to remain in effect as the Spanish Constitutional Tribunal reviews its constitutionality, despite the fact that it contradicts a previous ruling by the same court.

The Chilean deputies note that “yesterday in Spain a modification to the abortion law entered into effect and which will permit in that country not only the murder of the defenseless in cases of rape, grave deformity or risk to life, but also now the crime will be liberalized” in cases of underage girls and for any reason up to 14 weeks gestation.

“The Chamber of Deputies agrees to express its solidarity to all world organizations that struggle against abortion and in particular to the Spanish NGO, Right to Life, who watch with horror how in Spain the most despicable murder has been perfected against a defenseless person, as is committed in an abortion,” the deputies stated. They added that “the victims, because of their legally defenseless condition cannot make recourse to international tribunals to demand the most basic human right, which is no other than the right to life.”

The Spanish pro-life organization HazteOir (Make Yourself Heard) called the declaration “a milestone in the creation of international networks of citizens organized to confront the expansion of the culture of death,” and encouraged people to communicate their thanks.
