Catholic Attorneys Fight Back Against Homosexual ‘Marriage’ in Argentina

By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman, Latin America Correspondent

BUENOS AIRES, March 2, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Catholic attorneys are appealing the decision of a judge who approved the “marriage” of two homosexual men in the city of Buenos Aires late last month.

According to the Argentine newspaper La Razon, the Corporation of Catholic Attorneys asked that the sentence be nullified because of the “irreparable burden” it would cause, and because it “violates human rights.”

“The family is the natural and fundamental element of the society and has the right to the protection of the society and of the government,” the attorneys observe.

Contending that the decision is unconstitutional, the attorneys note that “as matrimony is naturally and juridically ordered to the family, and this depends on procreation, therefore no homosexual union can be based on a complete matrimonial consent.”

“For them, the union of people of the same sex could never constitute a marriage, much less establish a family, because homosexual marriage is unconstitutional and in violation of human rights,” they add.

Although the city government of Buenos Aires at first refused to appeal the decision itself, it reportedly reversed its stance after coming under heavy fire from the city’s Catholic archbishop, Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

The decision to permit the “wedding” of the two homosexuals was made by Judge Elena Liberatori, who oversees appeals regarding administrative issues.

Homosexuals have sought permission to “marry” in a variety of venues in Argentina, but only one couple in the province of Tierra del Fuego has succeeded to receiving approval, in December of last year, after the provincial governor refused to fight the decision.
