Leaders of Spanish Medical Associations Blast Abortion Law

By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman

MADRID, May 10, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The leadership of Spain’s medical associations, gathered together at their annual Congress of the Medical Profession, have denounced Spain’s new abortion law, which allows doctors to kill unborn children for any reason during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

In a statement “Abortion is Not a Right,” the General Council of Official Medical Associations (CGCOM) repudiates the idea that killing an infant inside its mother’s womb could possibly be a “right,” despite contrary language in the law, which was passed recently by the ruling Spanish Socialist Worker’s Party.

“The medical profession has pronounced clearly on this controversial topic, indicating in the first place that one cannot speak of the ‘right to abortion,’ since the right to life is fundamental and cannot be renounced, and [abortion] even continues to be considered a crime except in the terms fixed by the law,” says the CGCOM.

A roundtable on “the doctor confronted by the new abortion law” held at the congress in late April, and led by the president of the Medical Association of Zaragoza, pointed out that the title of the law, which refers to abortion as the “voluntary interruption of pregnancy” is erroneous because “everything that is interrupted can be restarted, and evidently, this is not the case.” It also denounced the use of abortion as a form of contraception.

Also during the congress representatives of Spain’s medical associations examined and commented on an analysis written by the spokesman for the ethics commission of the Organization of Medical Associations, Luis Cipres, who asks if it is ethical “to create zones of impunity in which the fundamental good of others is injured, without any ethical and legal responsibility.”
