“Pastor to the Unborn” Rev. Hunter Tells Pro-Lifers to “Persevere No Matter What Happens”

By Patrick B. Craine

OTTAWA, Ontario, November 2, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In an impassioned address to hundreds gathered on Friday night at the International Pro-Life Conference in Ottawa, Ontario, black pro-life leader Rev. Johnny Hunter exhorted pro-lifers to trust totally in God and proclaimed that He has a “great reward” for those dedicated to saving the lives of the unborn.

The “pastor to the unborn,” as he calls himself, began his speech by describing how he recently suffered a massive heart attack and underwent open heart surgery; only after the fact did he learn that when the surgeons opened him up, his heart stopped beating.

“[The doctor] took my heart, since everything was open, and started massaging,” he explained. Five minutes, ten minutes went by and his heart was still not beating. “He didn’t want to stop. He just kept going. … Fifteen minutes later, he was still there by himself.”

“Twenty minutes that man massaged my heart and it started up again,” said Hunter, to applause. When everyone else had given up, “he persevered to make sure I was alive.” “This is what we as pro-lifers have to do. … We’ve got to do all that’s necessary.”

Rev. Hunter is the President of the Life Education and Resource Network (LEARN), the largest African American pro-life organization in the U.S. He describes his mission as “the enhancement of the value of the child.” Under his leadership, the black community has been enlightened about the devastating effects of abortion on their race. He has been arrested numerous times for witnessing outside abortion facilities, including one time when he preached for six full hours before being arrested.

In his talk Hunter juxtaposed those who “believe in God,” which he pointed out would even include Satan, and those who “believe God.”

He lambasted those politicians who claim a Christian faith while opposing the teachings of Christ in Congress, denouncing, for example, the “stupid politician” who says “I believe in life, however…” “Once you give a however, then I know we ain’t talking,” he said. And to those who would say “We don’t want to legislate morality,” he said, “Then get out of Congress!”

It was Abraham’s strong faith that empowered him when he bargained with God over the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, said Hunter. “He pleaded with God, because he believed God.”

“You have to step up a notch,” he said. “You have to get to that point where you totally, one-hundred-percent, believe God, and you can trust Him, even if it leads to your death.”

“I am willing to go to prison for the cause, I am willing to die for the cause, because I believe God,” he added.

Hunter spoke about the amazing work of the growing black pro-life movement, and highlighted especially the new film Maafa 21, which exposes the black genocide being perpetrated in the U.S. through abortion. “All around the nation, the people don’t want you to know that blacks are getting involved” in the pro-life cause, he explained. “When we get involved we’ve got some crazy stuff. … We are fighting this thing differently.”

He exhorted the attendees with a meditation on two Gospel passages. In the first, Christ tells the disciples, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” (Matt. 6:25). In the second, Christ says, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance. … For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink” (Matt. 25:34-35).

“Jesus said to you that life is more important than food, our bodies are more important than wearing clothes,” said Hunter. “Every time you save a baby’s life, … isn’t that more than giving food?”

“If he is willing to bless those who gave food, think of the great reward he has for you who have saved a human life!” he exclaimed.

“Keep standing. Don’t give up. Persevere no matter what happens. No matter how bad things look, don’t give up!” he said. “You believe in God and He believes in you!”
