Commentary on November 3 News – Wild Political Ride in the US

It has been a wild political ride in the US last night and today. The results have been very good for the cause of life and family although there were also some notable disappointments, the main one being the not unexpected inability of the Republicans to take control of the Senate. However, the gain of six Senate seats is not insignificant.

California proved once again to be a very different culture from much of the rest of the US. It is hard to fathom how sensible people could re-elect (after his long absence) someone like 72-year-old Jerry Brown and the always pugnacious, radical feminist Barbara Boxer. But, the Hollywood movie and lead porn producing state did just that, as did the gambling state of Nevada re-elect the downright nasty Harry Reid. Such is life.

Many are seriously asking the question – now what should we be doing with these huge political gains? There appears to be an unusual determination to not repeat the mistakes of the recent past and to put principles well above party and personal gain. A novel, but very, very necessary idea at this crucial time in US history.

An article by Senator Jim DeMint in the Wall Street Journal reflects this growing new political mood in traditional conservative political circles. It cannot be business as usual in politics because of the obvious gravity of what is now at stake.

DeMint’s article is all about economic matters and does not mention the life and family issues, but it does stress adherence to principles. For many of the newly elected and re-elected, the protection of human life and the family are very high on their prioirity list. The DeMint article therefore also applies to them in that it stresses the need for politicians to adhere to their principles above all other considerations and to reject party pressures to abandon those principles.

The days, weeks and months ahead are certain to be interesting.
