Government of Mexico City is Acting like a ‘Dictatorship’: Archdiocese of Guadalajara

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 6, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Archdiocese of Guadalajara has said that the government of Mexico City is behaving like a “dictatorship” by filing a complaint with the nation’s Secretariat of Governance in response to the archbishop’s opposition to the city’s abortionist and homosexualist policies.
In a communiqué addressing the legal complaint filed by the city, the archdiocese stated that, “We are waiting the terms in which Governance will present the issue, to give a response, with all respect to the institutions and laws that govern us.”
However, the archdiocese added, “if the suit is accepted, we will have confirmed that this is a dictatorship that does not allow criticism.”
The complaint was filed by Mexico City Chief of Government Marcelo Ebrard against the Archbishop of Guadalajara, Juan Sandoval Iñiguez, for recent statements opposing Mexico City’s pro-abortion and pro-homosexual laws. In particular the cardinal has charged Mexico City’s Supreme Court Justices with accepting bribes for their votes in favor of gay “marriage.”
The complaint claims that archbishop’s actions violate Article 130 of the Mexican Constitution, which forbids the participation of clerics in politics. The article, long disputed in Mexico, was imposed on the country in 1917 by socialist legislators who were not popularly elected.
Despite legal action taken against him, Sandoval and the Archdiocese of Guadalajara have repeatedly refused to withdraw the charge of bribery, insisting that the cardinal has proof to support his claims, which will be submitted in his defense as early as today, according to local media reports.
