Pro-Abort Group Pushes “Blob” Media Images that Hide the Humanity of the Unborn

By Patrick B. Craine

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, October 20, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC) has recommended a set of photos to the media for abortion-related stories that, according to one pro-life leader, shows the “foolish” lengths to which the abortion lobby will go to hide the humanity of the unborn.

At the same time, the pro-abortion group has admitted that the number of abortions reported by Statistics Canada is lower than the true figure, saying “many” abortion facilities do not report the abortions they commit.

As reported by the blog Big Blue Wave, the ARCC is recommending three pictures to media outlets, two that depict the unborn child’s gestational sac rather than the unborn child himself. The third is a shot of a woman holding a positive pregnancy test.

“It’s a complete denial of reality,” said Mary Ellen Douglas, national organizer for Campaign Life Coalition. “They think they can show a blob and this is what the little baby is. Well, what’s inside there? Is there a heart beating in there?”

Douglas said it is amazing that opponents of rights for the unborn are still trying to delude the public, even after the many advances in ultrasound technology and digital media. “There’s none so blind as those who will not see. The technology is all there and all they have to do is look at it.”

“You can’t hide the reality of the unborn child by pretending it’s a blob,” she added. “It isn’t. The science is against them on this.”

In the ARCC’s statement on the photos, coordinator Joyce Arthur complains that media often use photos of women in late pregnancy, which she says is “inaccurate and inappropriate.” “Portraying a heavily pregnant woman in the context of abortion simply feeds the anti-abortion myth that women routinely have abortions right up to the 9th month of pregnancy,” she writes.

Arthur then cites statistics showing that early term abortions are vastly more common than late-term. But she also claims that the number of early abortions in Canada is actually much higher than the statistics reveal. “The real number for Canada must be considerably higher because abortion clinics do far more early abortions than hospitals, and many clinics don’t report to Statistics Canada,” she said.

Statistics Canada reported last year that there were 91,377 abortions in 2006, the most recent year available. But they themselves point out that the figure is unreliable, and does not include any abortion information from British Columbia. The government collects the abortion statistics through what is called the Therapeutic Abortion Survey, but as the StatsCan website explains, participation is strictly voluntary.

LifeSiteNews.com did not hear back from Joyce Arthur by press time.
