Latin America Under Siege

Dear Friends of life and family,

The “culture of death” — Pope John Paul II’s term for the international pro-abortion and anti-family movement, is now winning serious victories in Latin America.

After decades of failure, the efforts of big international abortionist organizations and their well-financed proxies are increasingly converting ruling elites to their pro-death position.

In recent months, Mexico City has approved abortion on demand, same sex “marriage” and adoption, sexual education programs that normalize perversion, and express divorce. The federal government has also begun to impose abortion on the states through the Secretariat of Health and is pushing its own anti-family sex education program.

The Mexican Supreme Court has recently issued a shocking ruling approving these measures as “constitutional,” prompting accusations from the Archbishop of Guadalajara of bribery by international organizations. The Archbishop is now being sued by the mayor of Mexico City, creating a potential religious crisis in the country.

In South America, the culture of death is advancing rapidly as well; the president of Argentina recently signed a homosexual “marriage” provision into law, making Argentina the first country in Latin America to do so at the national level. Pro-abortion legislation is also in the works, and similar initiatives are advancing in other countries.

Although the average Latin American remains strongly pro-life and pro-family, the government, media, and civil institutions are selling their people out to the international death lobby, opposed only by the Catholic Church as well as traditional Protestant churches, and a few small and underfunded organizations.

Fortunately, LifeSiteNews is there, to provide coverage to our English-speaking readers, and for over a year, to Portuguese speakers as well, with our award-winning site in the Lusitanian tongue. Soon, we plan to officially announce our new website in Spanish as well. The struggle over the right to life is an international one, and LifeSiteNews has from its founding been committed to delivering the news readers need worldwide to address the challenges their societies face.

We bring you stories that illustrate the devastating effects of the culture of death as it progresses through countries like Brazil, where the ruling party is fighting an ongoing battle to legalize abortion and prohibit criticism of the homosexual lifestyle.

We report on countries like Chile, where a homosexualist European government is running an advertising campaign to legitimize sodomy. LSN also brings you continuous coverage of events in Britain, where the culture of death is perhaps more advanced than anywhere else in the world.

LSN’s global coverage on life and family issues, which includes four reporters in the United States, four more in Canada, a Latin America correspondent (yours truly), a European correspondent (Hillary White), and a team of translators, is unique. It simply can’t be found anywhere else. We do this on a shoestring budget, less than $500,000 per year, which is far less than equivalent operations cost.

But without your help, we will not be able to continue to provide you with this vital service.

As we have mentioned in previous letters, LSN has gone into the red. We ran out of funds earlier this month and had to borrow money from a friendly organization just to keep operating.

On top of all of that, our current fundraising drive is well behind the very necessary goal of $100,000 for this quarter. As I write, we have only raised $41,371, which isn’t nearly enough for our modest needs.

Although LSN receives up to one million page loads per month, only a tiny fraction of our readers donate to keep our service going. If every reader donated only $5 per year, we would have more than adequate funding. Sadly, few donate even that.

Please donate to LifeSiteNews today.

If you have already donated during this fall campaign, we thank you for your help and ask you to please ignore this plea. If you have not yet donated, please consider a donation of $10, $50, $150, or more. Even a gift of $5 will be greatly appreciated, and will move us toward our goal.

If you cannot donate, please offer a prayer for LSN, for its staff and readers, and for the success of our fundraising drive.

Thank you for your support of LifeSiteNews.

Sincerely,

Matthew Cullinan Hoffman
