CANADA IS HAVEN FOR KIDDIE PORN

OTTAWA, Jan 27 (LSN.ca) - In what some people say is a related story, the Toronto Star reported Tuesday that Canada has become “a world destination for people seeking children through the sex trade.” The article discusses the findings in a 72-page report by the Canadian Council on Social Development, entitled “The Progress of Canada's Children into the Millennium.” The report reveals that “the child sex trade is increasing, with an estimated 100 offences each day in Vancouver alone.” A Save the Children Canada spokesman, told the Toronto Star that “most men who come to Canada come from the United States. But many also come from Asian countries. And there is also regional travel within Canada for the child sex trade.”

Critics of the federal government’s refusal to clamp down hard on kiddie porn possession by using the Charter of Rights’ “notwithstanding clause” have been arguing that compromise on this issue will be interpreted as a pro-child pornography stance by all sectors of the industry including producers, distributors and consumers. If subsequent research indicates a continued rise in kiddie porn activity in Canada, critics hope that a public image of aiding and abetting child abusers will have a significant impact on the amount of support given to the federal Liberals in the next election.
