KEITH MARTIN REVEALS ABORTION ISSUE AS POLITICAL PRIORITY

OTTAWA, June 20 (LSN.ca) - Demonstrating the shallow ties of social liberals to the Canadian Alliance, some have threatened to abandon the party if the party allows social conservatives the freedom to actually act on their beliefs. Prominent yesterday was Alliance leadership candidate Keith Martin who is heading for a fourth place finish in the race. "There's no way I'm going to put up with that," said Martin reacting to comments about the possibility of pro-life advances within the Alliance. "If the party strays [into that territory], then I'll have to reconsider my future," said Martin, revealing how intensely important his abortion position is tied to his politics.

Martin's comments seem to have encouraged the Progressive Conservative Party to begin wooing him. The Post reports that Marjory LeBreton, Conservative senator and co-chairwoman of the party's national election readiness effort, and Susan Elliott, the PC party's national director, have questioned why Martin is in the Canadian Alliance party given his strong pro-abortion stance. "He seems to be a fiscal conservative and socially tolerant," said Ms. Elliott. "That's our positioning."

A few months ago Ontario Finance Minister Ernie Eves joined the Alliance to support Tom Long but also warned that he would leave if Long did not win the leadership. Eves is also known to be strongly pro-abortion.
