MULTI-FAITH COALITION OF LEADERS OBJECT TO CLONING IN ENGLAND

LONDON, Jan 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) - In what some are calling a historical first, religious leaders have joined in one voice in England - to urge the postponement of parliament's moves to allow human cloning. The Daily Telegraph reported yesterday that the Archbishops of Canterbury and York joined the Roman Catholic Archbishops of Westminster and Glasgow, as well as Muslim, Sikh, Jewish, Baptist and Evangelical leaders in a communique on the issue.

The letter warns that "the philosophical and ethical implications" of human cloning have not been fully considered and urges further debate, especially since the decision is being rushed through parliament in such a way as to make it not open to amendment. Next week the legislation to allow human cloning for research purposes is to be decided by the House of Lords.
