AFRICAN BISHOPS SAY CONDOMS MAY BE MAIN REASON FOR SPREAD OF AIDS
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, July 31, 2001 (LSN.ca) - The Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference issued a statement Monday condemning the promotion of condoms in the country battered by AIDS. "Condoms may even be one of the main reasons for the spread of HIV-AIDS," said the Bishops. They explained that "Apart from the possibility of condoms being faulty or wrongly used they contribute to the breaking down of self-control and mutual trust."
The statement said, "The Bishops regard the widespread and indiscriminate promotion of condoms as an immoral and misguided weapon in our battle against HIV-AIDS." The bishops proposed the solution to the AIDS crisis namely to "abstain" before and "be faithful" in marriage.
