ONTARIO PREMIER HOPEFUL FLAHERTY SAYS HE'S PRO-LIFE
TORONTO, November 15, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Ontario Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, one of the candidates for the race for Leader of the Progressive Conservatives and thus interim Premier came out publicly affirming his pro-life beliefs yesterday. Reporters questioned Flaherty on his stance after the other top contender in the race, Ernie Eves, offered his pro-abortion stance.
The Toronto Sun reports today that Flaherty responded to the query saying, "I am pro-life, I'm on record in that regard." Unfortunately he also added the statement: "It's not a matter we deal with provincially except our obligation to comply with the Canada Health Act, which we do in the funding of abortion services. We obey the law." The Canada Health Act in fact does not require provinces to fund abortion and MPPs have frequently been advised of this by Campaign Life Coalition.
