INDIA'S GOVERNMENT SET TO MAKE TWO-CHILD POPULATION CONTROL POLICY

NEW DELHI, February 26, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The Indian Minster for Health and Family Welfare C.P. Thakur said Monday that the government may institute a two-child maximum population control policy. "Realising the urgent need to stabilise population we are actively considering making the two-child norm as a policy," Thakur said inaugurating a national seminar on "Reproductive and Child Health -- Key to Population Stabilisation."

India is currently plagued with a wide practice of sex-selective abortions, especially among the poor, since girl babies are actively avoided especially because of the burden of wedding dowries.
