LESBIANS SURPRISED AT COOL RECEPTION IN OTTAWA
OTTAWA, February 7, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Two lesbians who say they felt welcome at Quebec's hearings into homosexual marriage last year were disappointed by the reception they got at Ottawa's committee hearings this week, where they say MPs were less than warm.
"The atmosphere there was very different," said (Ms.) Gabriel Pinkstone, recalling her experience in Quebec. "In fact, I came back inspired by Canadian democracy in that case. They came and said 'Hello'. They made a particular effort to relax people so that they would feel comfortable."
But in Ottawa, she says, members of the House of Commons justice committee, most of whom oppose what homosexual activists are trying to do, were "curt" with her and her partner, Monica Perazzo. "I feel that there were people who had already made up their minds..."
The lesbians' real complaint seems to be that some MPs actually disagreed with them -- something that homosexual activists are not used to seeing in Ottawa. For example, John McKay, (Lib., Scarborough East) told one homosexual witness, "You will destroy the symbolism that you crave." Another, Derek Lee, (Lib., Scarborough Centre), told a witness "you are using up my time" (in fact a common tactic) when her answer was too slow. Pat O'Brien (Lib., London-Fanshawe) said his riding is "absolutely, overwhelmingly opposed to changing the definition of marriage."
