INFORMED CONSENT LEGISLATION IN 23 STATE LEGISLATURES THIS YEAR

WASHINGTON, March 25, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Abortion proponents are losing the monopoly on "women's rights" with some 23 state legislatures taking up women's right to know legislation on abortion. The bills require that, prior to obtaining an abortion, women are provided with information on the procedure, other options available to them and, in some cases, a waiting period to consider the information.

The Catholic News Service reports that such laws in Delaware, Florida and Indiana are facing legal challenges despite the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court has sanctioned them by refusing to reconsider a lower court decision affirming the Indiana law.

Mary Spaulding Balch, director of state legislation for the National Right to Life Committee commented on the legislative measures saying, "When a woman receives objective evidence about the development of her baby and of the availability of alternatives, often it eases her mind. When a woman sees there is a 'better way,' many times she will choose it."
