MARYLAND SENATE BLOCKS OVER-THE-COUNTER ABORTION PILL

But pro-lifers suffer setback over parental notification

BALTIMORE, March 26, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A state senate committee in Maryland has blocked a Democratic Party attempt to make the RU-486 abortifacient drug available over-the-counter without a doctor's approval. Maryland's House of Delegates had endorsed the plan a day earlier.

Proponents of the drug are using the argument that it would "prevent" abortions by terminating the pregnancy without surgical intervention by an abortionist when the unborn child is more developed.

However, a Senate bill to strengthen parental notification laws before a teenager can get an abortion was withdrawn by its own sponsor. With a new Republican governor who is not particularly pro-life, Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., pro-lifers were attempting to focus on parental notification.
