ILLINOIS HOUSE RESTRICTS PRO-LIFE FREE SPEECH

SPRINGFIELD, April 2, 2003 (LifeSitNews.com) - Pro-lifers who protest outside abortion clinics could face 30 days in jail and a costly lawsuit under a law passed by Illinois legislators this week. The bill got approval from the House 62 votes to 49, and now goes to the state Senate.

Rep. Elaine Nekritz, a Democrat from Des Plaines and a key proponent, said pro-lifers must be prevented from "obstructing" access to clinics, even though the number of cases in which such a complaint is alleged have been declining.

"There is a right for peaceful access for someone to move forward and do what they wish to do," said Rep. Rosemary Mulligan, a Des Plaines Republican opposing the measure.

The bill now moves to the Senate.
