FLORIDA AMENDS HUMAN CLONING BAN TO ALLOW 'RESEARCH' CLONING

TAMPA, May 2, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Florida state legislators have opened up a loophole at the last minute in their "ban" on cloning to allow so-called therapeutic cloning for research purposes. The change means that the bill does not prevent human cloning -- as long as it is done on human embryos and that the embryos are destroyed before they can be born.

"And ye shall be as gods," said Rep. Don Brown, Republican from DeFuniak Springs. "Man sometimes steps over the boundary and tries to play the part of the maker," he was quoted saying in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The original bill would have banned both types of cloning. Sponsor Jim Kallinger, Republican for Winter Park, said the intent is irrelevant because "cloning is cloning."
