New Study Says Tubal Sterilization Raises Risk of Ovarian Cysts 70%

NEW YORK, August 5, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A study published in the August issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology reports that women who undergo tubal sterilization are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cysts compared to women using non-hormonal or no contraception. The research confirms similar findings in Mexico which indicated that sterilized women had twice the risk of ovarian cysts.

Dr. Victoria L. Holt from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and her colleagues studied the medical records of 392 women of child-bearing age diagnosed with ovarian cysts. Of note, the proportion of women with cysts "persisted or increased" when the researchers restricted their study to women with painful or large cysts.
