Ontario Premier McGuinty Visits Catholic School After Mocking Catholic Principles.
OTTAWA, October 21, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - On October 11, the Ottawa Citizen reported on pro-abortion and pro-homosexual "Catholic" Dalton McGuinty's visit to St. Patrick's High School, his alma mater. The students cheered as he accepted a gift of a school sweater. He spoke briefly about the need to be involved in political activities, to participate in public service and to "dream big dreams."
McGuinty follows in the footsteps of many current Canadian politicians with a Catholic background. It has become the accepted practice among Canadian Catholic politicians to claim the status of Catholic in good standing or so-called "devout" Catholics, but to publicly rebuke and ridicule Catholic moral teaching.
It has also become commonplace for Catholic schools and other Catholic institutions to invite such politicians as speakers and thereby permit them to feel quite comfortable with their deadly separation of politics from Catholic social and moral obligations.
McGuinty distinguished himself during the Ontario provincial election campaign not only by aggressively supporting the "right" of a woman to abortion, but by making statements on other issues that outraged faithful Catholics.
On September 24, he said, "I've made it very clear. I support same-sex marriage." McGuinty added, "It's important to know where you stand, as a matter of principle." He also said, as far back as 1999, that he would "compel all Ontario companies to extend drug, dental and other benefits to same-sex spouses."
That this kind of "principle" has become routine among Canada's "Catholic" politicians is clear from the complete lack of comment on the new premier's statements from Ontario's Catholic bishops.
