Mother Refused Abortion While Fighting Breast Cancer: Dies at 82
BILOXI, May 12, 2004, (LifeSiteNews.com) - Jacobina Surian Adams, 82, has died; she is survived by her daughters, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One of those daughters would not be alive today if it had not been for her mother's faith and courage.
In 1962, while two-months pregnant with her daughter Laverne, Jacobina was diagnosed with breast cancer and the doctors recommended an abortion. Jacobina refused and went on to give birth and defeat breast cancer. The Adams' are devout Catholics and they credit their mother with instilling her faith in them. "As we were growing up, we never went into the car without saying the rosary," said Laverne Burdine, the youngest daughter. "We never missed church."
The Catholic Church has declared that courage like Jacobina's is worthy of veneration among the Catholic faithful. In April 1994 Pope John Paul II beatified Gianna Beretta Molla, an Italian woman who chose to forego cancer treatment while pregnant in order to save the life of her unborn child and who later died of the disease. Gianna's doctor also recommended abortion.
Annette Adams gave a simple explanation for her mother's courage, "She just had faith."
