EU Socialists Seek to Bar New Commissioner for Christian take on Homosexuality
BRUSSELS, October 6, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A newly appointed European Union Commissioner was criticized for statements he made during his confirmation hearing, including that homosexuality is sinful.
Italian Rocco Buttiglione, commissioner-designate for justice, freedom and security, said Tuesday that "Many things may be considered immoral which should not be prohibited . . . I may think that homosexuality is a sin, this has no effect on politics unless I say that homosexuality is a crime," he said, as reported by Reuters news.
"After he has judged homosexuality as immoral, how can I trust this man to protect homosexuals against discrimination?" Cathalijne Buitenweg, a Dutch Green MEP said.
The Party of European Socialists later sent a release saying they would not endorse Buttiglione's appointment as Justice and Home Affairs Commissioner.
