UN Officials Argue for Abortion at Nicaragua Supreme Court
President of pro-life group charges “UN officials are promoting a new holocaust, the Holocaust of the innocent unborn”

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, April 30, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Dr. Rafael Cabrera, president of the pro-life group Anprovida, said two UN officials arguing before the Supreme Court have no business telling his country how to manage its internal affairs.
Cabrera, an obstetrician, forcefully denounced the presence of two UN officials who are arguing in favor of the restoration of legal therapeutic abortion in Nicaraguan law. The Supreme Court is currently considering a civil challenge to the law that prohibits all “therapeutic abortion.”
The law passed last October and closed a previous loophole that allowed abortion in cases of threats to the mother’s “health” a term that in other countries has created de facto abortion on demand. Under the law abortionists face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
The law was unanimously supported by Nicaragua’s 92 Parliamentarians and 200,000 rallied in its favour in the capital Managua.
Cabrera said the officials are interested in having his country “conform to the pro-death UN conventions of Cairo and Beijing, in which Nicaragua always expressed reservations about abortion and gender control.”
The UN officials at the Supreme Court have implied that Nicaragua will lose international financial aid if abortion is not instated, a common tactic of international abortion promoters at the international body. Similar threats have been levelled against the country by the European Union should the law not be overturned.
The officials have “no right,” Cabrera said, to “alter the sovereign will of the citizens of the countries they are supposedly serving.” 290,000 Nicaraguans signed a petition asking for the law prohibiting abortion. The law was approved by “a massive majority, without a single vote against it,” he said.
Cabrera emphasized top UN leaders should work to keep the organization faithful to it’s original mission of serving human dignity and avoiding holocausts. “With their attitude, these UN officials are promoting a new holocaust,” he added, “the Holocaust of the innocent unborn.”
