After One Year, Pro-Life Mexican President Gets 75% Positive Rating
MEXICO CITY, August 31, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- After one year in office, Mexico's pro-life president Felipe Calderon is receiving positive poll ratings from a majority of Mexicans, according to a recent survey.
The survey, sponsored by the Mexican publication Milenio, asked recipients "Has Felipe Calderón fulfilled his campaign promises?" Eleven percent said "yes" and sixty-four percent said "Yes, to a certain extent", for a total of 75%. Only 18% responded "No."
When asked if Calderon had performed better or worse than expected, 50% responded "better" and only 31% responded "worse".
Calderon has consistently maintained pro-life principles since he was elected to office in 2006, defeating the pro-abortion socialist Manuel Lopez Obrador. A daily Mass attendee, Calderon stated during his campaign that "on the subject of abortion, I am pro-life, and I also see that it is a matter clearly regulated by law, and most of all in judicial terms well settled."
Since Calderon took office late last year, Mexico City has passed a law legalizing abortion during the first trimester. The Calderon administration quickly responded by appealing the law to Mexico's Supreme Court, citing the Constitution's protection of the right to life from the moment of conception. The outcome of that appeal is still pending.
Calderon has not attempted to overturn the existing law that permits abortion in cases of rape, fetal deformity, and to protect the mother's "health".
According to polls, a large majority of Mexicans oppose expanding access to abortion in the country. In practice, abortions are rarely performed even under the approved categories, due to the deep opposition by Mexicans to the practice of abortion.
