WEST CRITICIZED FOR SILENCE ON CHINESE HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES
BONN, Germany, Feb 24 (LSN) Yesterday exiled Chinese freedom fighter Wei Jingsheng criticized western nations for looking on "in silence as human rights are trampled daily in China." Wei stressed that the only Western politicians that speak forcefully for human rights in China are those not in positions of power. He said that the UN is "an organization without authority, which sends representatives to Beijing simply to be able to say it has made efforts towards dialogue."
Agence France-Presse reported that Wei rejected the notion that economic dealings with China encourage change. This is the approach that has been adopted by Prime Minister Chretien. In terms of economic partnerships "China is making the rules and the West is playing by them," said Wei.
