CANADIAN STEM CELL LEGISLATION TO BE DEBATED TUESDAY

CLC urges Canadians to call MPs today

OTTAWA, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - LifeSite has learned from sources in Ottawa that Bill C-13, the 'Assisted Human Reproduction Act' will be debated in the House of Commons Tuesday, January 28 as well as Wednesday or Thursday this week, the first week parliament is back in session.

The bill allows for destructive research on embryonic humans and is flawed in its definitions of cloning thus failing to effectively ban cloning as it purports to do. Campaign Life Coalition has called on all pro-lifers to contact their MP's and ask them to vote against Bill C-13.

CHRETIEN GOVERNMENT FIGHTS GAG LAW DECISION

Very determined to restrict citizen influence in elections

Ottawa, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Globe and Mail reports today that the federal Liberals are at it again, and are appealing a December judgment in the Alberta Court of Appeal that upheld a lower court's quashing of the most recent gag law.

For years, the federal government has been attempting to limit election influence to registered political parties only and to severely limit third party groups or individuals from conducting information and candidate position campaigns during elections.

One 'gag law' after another has been trotted out only to be defeated each time in the courts as being an unreasonable restriction on the rights of citizens to express their views during elections. The National Citizens Coalition (NCC) has been the main legal defender of citizens rights against the federal government's suppression attempts.

"We had hoped the government would finally get the point that gag laws are wrong, that they deny free speech," says NCC vice president Gerry Nicholls. "But it seems the Liberals are determined to gag Canadians during elections."

OFFICIAL ESTIMATE AT U.S. MARCH FOR LIFE: 200,000

WASHINGTON, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - LifeSite spoke today with Nellie Gray the organizer of the March for Life in Washington D.C. Gray told LifeSite that the official estimate of those at the March was 200,000.

Jim Hughes, President of Campaign Life Coalition Canada attended the March and told LifeSite that it was "Unbelievable." Hughes recalled "We were standing at the staging area and we couldn't move, it took almost an hour to start walking. It was the coldest day in 10 years in Washington but we were kept warm by a sea of bodies. Everyone was upbeat and positive with average age under 25. It was a joyful mass of people talking, praying, chanting ... a very positive experience."

Gray said she was not concerned that the liberal media basically ignored the March. "Our work must go on, this is God's work," she said.

MAJOR U.S. NETWORKS IGNORED MASSIVE MARCH FOR LIFE

WASHINGTON, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Media Research Centre has issued a stinging evaluation of the major networks failure to cover the March for Life. "True to the historical pattern and despite the 30th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision, ABC, CBS, and NBC studiously ignored (the Jan 22) March for Life in Washington, a stark contrast with the Bush-bashing anti-war march just four days before," says the MRC.

Compared to the in depth and extensive coverage of the anti-war rally which drew 10,000, the March for Life which drew a few hundred thousand received relatively no coverage.

In contrast to the networks featuring of sound bites from marchers in the anti-war protest over the weekend, the ABC, CBS, and NBC stories on Wednesday night did not include a syllable from any participant, on stage or in the crowd at the massive March for Life. Despite tens of thousands of pro-lifers in Washington and just tens of pro-abortion protesters (a midday Planned Parenthood rally was estimated by Reuters at 150), Dan Rather misled viewers into assuming large crowds on both sides: "Tens of thousands of demonstrators on both sides of the issue filled the streets of Washington today."

The ABC and CBS newscasts also ignored Bush's phone speech to the crowd; NBC and ABC's Nightline each ran just a 14-word sound bite of the President's supportive remarks.

BABY DEATH CENTRE DEATH BECOMES REPOSITORY FOR BIBLES

GULFPORT, DE, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A former abortuary has been transformed into a repository for Bibles. Temple Baptist Church purchased the vacated offices of abortionist Dr. Brooker in Gulfport. The church's Bible, Education and Missionary Service ships Bibles to missionaries in 80 countries. The room in which countless unborn babies were killed now houses some 18,000 Bibles.

Teresa Forrester, one of the people who protested outside the abortion mill until its closing March 2, 1998, said "This building where once life was taken here now life is given, the word of God is given out. So I can't do nothing but rejoice."

A piece of the barbed wire used for a fence around the old abortuary hangs on the wall shaped into the Christian symbol of a fish. "We want to remember where we came from," Forrester said. "This building came from a really evil source. I mean babies were being murdered."

CROATION GOVERNMENT INTRODUCES PRO-HOMOSEXUAL LEGISLATION

ZAGREB, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Government of Croatia sparked furor in the legislature today as it introduced amendments to existing family law which would give legal recognition to cohabitating homosexual couples. Prominent legislators in the largely Catholic country condemned the bill which has weak support since members of the coalition government oppose the measure.

A legislator from the Croation Party of Rights called the bill "unacceptable" noting that the bill is "a step toward equalizing families and gay couples." Ljubica Lalic, a Member of the Peasants' Party - part of the governing coalition, agreed saying: "We cannot consider their relations the same as a family or a heterosexual couple."

VICTORY FOR PRO-LIFERS IN NORWAY AS GOV'T FORCED TO ADMIT ERROR ON ABORTION NUMBERS

OSLO, January 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Norwegian pro-life newspaper Dagen, successfully challenged the government on numbers of deaths caused by 'unsafe' abortions in developing countries. In an attempt to justify funding for overseas abortions, Valgerd Svarstad Haugland, minister of culture and church and the leader of the Christian People's Party (Kristelig Folkeparti or KrF) said, "Each year 800,000 women die in developing countries because abortions are not performed in a medically proper way."

Norwegian reporter Jostein Sandsmark consulted with international pro-life organizations to determine the veracity of the Minister's claims. Hillary White, director of research for Campaign Life Coalition Toronto, told Sandsmark the Norwegian figure compared with the U.S. pro-abortion lie that before Roe V. Wade, "hundreds of thousands" of women died each year from back street abortions. "The Norwegian number is, by the way, the biggest number claim I have seen so far. It is very likely not just an exaggerated statistic, but an outright lie," said White.

After being confronted with the fact that the figure was 11.5 times higher than those of the pro-abortion group UNFPA and 130 times higher that the estimate of American Life League, Haugland investigated the matter.

Dagen reports that the Minister says her number was caused by a "misprint". Haughland said, "There was one zero too much. I am sorry. The right figure is 80,000." Even this figure is questioned by White who wonders where the numbers come from. Haughland nevertheless stands by the funding of abortion in the developing world, regardless of facts.
