May 9, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – International pro-abortion organizations are using the case of a pregnant El Salvadoran woman suffering from Lupus to promote the legalization of the killing of the unborn in the Central American country.

Amnesty International, the International Planned Parenthood Federation, and a group of certified United Nations “experts,” are joining other organizations to demand an abortion for an anonymous woman pseudonymously named “Beatriz” by the local press, claiming her life is in danger.

The woman, whose identity remains a secret, is reportedly a 22-year-old mother of one, who suffers from Lupus, as well as renal insufficiency.  Her doctors have requested authorization to abort her child, whom they claim is anencephalic, a condition in which the brain does not fully form, normally causing death inside the womb or soon after birth.

“The situation of Beatriz is urgent and must not wait any longer.  Her chances of surviving depend on the decision of the authorities,” claimed Esther Major, a representative of the pro-abortion “human rights” group Amnesty International on April 17.  The UN’s Office of the High Commission on Human Rights made similar claims on April 23, warning that “Beatriz” was “in urgent need of medical treatment to terminate her pregnancy and save her life.”

However, three weeks later, “Beatriz” has not yet had an abortion, and sources close to the case say that she remains at home because her condition has not even required hospitalization.  Nevertheless, her case has gone to the nation’s Supreme Court, which has thus far not rendered a verdict, waiting to examine opinions by a variety of agencies and groups, including the National Bioethics Council, the country’s Attorney General, the Human Rights Procurator, and the Ministry of Health.

According to gynecologist Carlos Mayora Escobar of the El Salvador Bioethics Association, “this patient is being very well attended in the Maternity Hospital. They are monitoring her carefully. They’re watching her vital signs,” reports the Spanish Catholic activist website HazteOir.

“The reality is that Beatriz will not die if she receives the proper medical attention, which includes observation and care within a medical center,” the association added in a press release.

Direct abortion is illegal in El Salvador in all circumstances, as it is in several Latin American countries.  Article 2 states that “Every person has the right to life,” and the country’s penal code states that “no person or authority can violate these constitutional precepts and act against an innocent life, committing the crime of abortion.”

Although abortionist organizations claim to be concerned about the health of “Beatriz,” pro-life groups say that their professed concern is nothing more than an attempt to use her case to legitimize and legalize abortion in El Salvador.

“What is clear is that they are manipulating this case, trying to use it to legalize [abortion], just as has happened in other countries that have manipulated terrible or extraordinary cases to request the legalization of the murder of babies in the womb of their mothers, whose lives are not at any risk, as is the case here,” remarks Regina Cardenal of Yes to Life.

“This a completely intentional manipulation,” stated the pro-life Family Network (Red Familia) in a press release, in which they accused certain governmental authorities in El Salvador who have favored the abortion of “promot[ing] particular interests in a malicious way.”

“We call on all attorneys and on the people to speak out.  The doctors have acted properly and in fact she (Beatriz) wouldn’t be walking around on the street if she were in serious condition as has been claimed on the news,” the group added.

The Spanish news service EFE seems to concur, writing in a recent headline: “‘Beatriz’ opens a new chapter in the struggle in favor of abortion in El Salvador.”
